Should You Get Battery-Operated Recessed Lights?

Blog

Recessed lighting that sits under cabinets gives you additional light in specific parts of your kitchen. This is perfect for dark corners and areas where you need to be able to see what you're doing without having your own body create a shadow that hovers over the workspace. However, installing lighting under cabinets often means installing hidden outlets and adding to the electrical load in your kitchen—something that not everyone wants to do. It's especially tough in older homes where the circuits may not be that big. One solution is to use battery-operated lighting under cabinets. This can make lighting up the room a lot faster and easier—if you're willing to do the needed maintenance.

It Will Save You Some Time and Work at First

With battery-operated lights under cabinets, you won't have to worry about doing any construction or rewiring. You can place the lights yourself or have a lighting company do that. It's better to let the lighting company place the lights because they have more experience determining where exactly the lights should go. The point is, installing battery-powered lights is faster because all you have to do is place some hook-and-loop closures or a couple of nails, and the lights are in. However, battery-operated lights require more work and maintenance after installation.

You Will Need to Change or Charge the Batteries

Under-cabinet lighting that is wired in or that's given its own outlet is pretty much set. Maybe, occasionally, you'll need electrical repair work done just as you would with other outlets. But that's really it until the bulb burns out. It's different with battery-operated lights; you'll need to either change or recharge the batteries regularly. That's not much work, of course, but you'll need to keep doing it again and again, and that can be annoying to some people.

You Can Easily Change the Style

Battery-operated lighting under cabinets can be easier to remove and change, if you decide you want to rearrange your kitchen counter areas. Lighting that is connected to a dedicated outlet and hardwired to a light switch, can't really be moved all that far. You'd also need to get the lighting company techs back into your kitchen to take care of rewiring if you did decide to make some massive changes to where the lights are located. Battery-operated lights are a cinch to move. You detach them from their hook-and-loop closures and install them elsewhere.

Recessed lighting can make your kitchen look brighter and cleaner. If the lights under the cabinets are battery-operated, you could find you have even more options for creating well-lit work spaces than you thought.
